ALTERNATIVE FASHION WEEK presented by Alternative Arts
21 - 25 APRIL 2008
Spitalfields Traders Market, Crispin Place, Brushfield St, London E1
OVER SIXTY YOUNG DESIGNERS will be selected to show their work. Hundreds of applications are received from recent fashion and textile graduates, independent designers aiming to establish their label and designers from the world of circus, theatre, carnival and club - everything from the sublime to the sensational.
FASHION SHOWS will be open to the Press and Public daily at 1.15pm starring stunning NEW MODELS and contemporary live jazz. TWELVE DIFFERENT designers will show each day. Original and recycled textiles are a major feature and there will be womenswear, menswear, headwear, footwear, workwear, leisurewear, underwear, fetish and fantasywear. THE FASHION MARKET from 12 noon to 3pm each day is a shopping sensation with stalls selling an exotic range of clothes, textiles and accessories. It's full of must-haves and, of course, big bags.
ALTERNATIVE FASHION WEEK provides a genuine alternative for truly innovative designers to present their work directly to the press, the public and the fashion industry. Alternative Arts supports this fresh talent by producing and directing Alternative Fashion Week at no charge to the designers.
THE EVENT will be held in the new Spitalfields Traders Market supported by the Spitalfields Estate and surrounded by the Fashion Market and fabulous food outlets. ALTERNATIVE ARTS is a publicly funded arts organisation. We present fashion as an exciting and original art form and expression of current culture. ADMISSION IS FREE to this event and includes a programme listing every designer. Collections will be taken up for the AIDS charity Terrence Higgins Trust
BUYERS AND THE PRESS are invited to reserve front row seats at each Fashion Show
by phone/fax/email to Alternative Arts. Special spaces will be allocated for photographers and film and video crews. "I am an artist working with fashion. My artwork exists on numerous levels and draws on various concepts. It deconstructs the female form physically and conceptually, explores female myths, interacts with the audience, and has a strong element of humour and sexual energy.
I am fascinated by the representation of women in art and the media. Myths old and new have always interested me, from fairytales, shampoo adverts to cartoons. Myths are icons. They are concepts everyone knows and understands. The “Dizzy Blond” is an example of a modern day myth. Myths are built up through the media, films, adverts and cartoons. They are emotive and loaded with meaning.
I work with latex because I like its shiny, elastic and inflatable qualities. It moulds the body and makes the ultimate cartoon skin.
In the future I would like to be represented by a gallery, performing and interacting with different environments."
